Costs of Self-publishing

Self-publishing can be misleading. Many people think you write a book, then self-publish it at little or not financial cost, and then wait for the cash to roll in. Nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is nobody is waiting on pins and needles to read your book. You have to create a buzz for your book AFTER you’ve created a quality product.

How do I create a quality book?

You have to hire professionals to do the things you can’t do. For example, you should never edit your own book (nor should you let your mom, spouse, or neighbor who uses big words edit it). You should also never create your own book cover. And to market your book do you even know where to start?

If you want to compete with professionally published books then you need to hire publishing professionals to help you create your book.

Unless you’ve been through self-publishing you probably aren’t sure where to start.

Where do I find self-publishing professionals?

That’s where I come in. I know and work with many publishing professionals that are more than happy to help you with your book on a contract basis. The price varies, depending on the amount of work and level of expertise required. However, you contract directly with your publishing professionals (editors, graphic artists, publicists, marketing consultants, etc. whatever you need). Some of these tasks I can do for you, while other times I put you in touch with the right people to help you make your book the best it can be.

Sounds great, but HOW MUCH?

Okay, here’s how it works. I offer a menu of options and you pick what’s right for you.

  • To initially evaluate your manuscript
  • If you’ve already written some or all of your book’s manuscript, I’ll read it and then meet with you to share my critic of your work. I’ll also suggest how you should proceed in order to get your book finished and published. For this evaluation I charge $100 per 100 pages minimum, prorated per page after that.

  • To finish your book
  • To meet with you each week for an hour (four times in a month), plus answering your additional email and phone call questions as they come up, as outlined on the How to do help you finish your book? page, I charge $300 per month. However, if you commit to three months or more, and pay in advance, I charge $200 per month for the same services.

  • To help you self-publish your book
  • Same deal as when you’re writing your book. We meet once a week (four times in a month) at which time I outline the tasks you need to do that week on your path to getting your book self-published. For that I charge $300 per month, or $200 per month if you commit to three months or more and pay in advance. If you decide you want me to do any or all of the self-publishing tasks for you or you hit a snag and you need me to untangle it, then I charge $75 per hour for my time.

  • To put together a customized marketing plan for your book
  • Marketing is by far the most important step in your journey. Because you can have the best book in the world, but no one can find it, no one will buy it. I will put together a customized marketing plan that entails a step-by-step process for you to follow, which includes researching your markets for you (if needed) so that you can target your audience. To accomplish this, I charge $75 per hour, however, I will give you a fixed fee quote for your marketing plan after we determine what exactly you need. So you’ll know in advance what your marketing plan will cost. From there you can decide if you want to move forward with it.

These pricing options are totally mix and match, so you pay only for the services you need.

You may write only one book in your lifetime, or you may go on to write several books. In either case, don’t you want get your book(s) out there in the most efficient and professional way possible?
